What is The Nourishing Mother?
The definition of mothered according to the Cambridge Dictionary: to treat a person with great kindness and love and to try to protect them from anything dangerous or difficult. And that’s what the experience I hope to provide to my clients. While I do think there are incredibly difficult moments during motherhood that you cannot get around or be protected from, my wish is that you’ll never feel alone in those moments.
After birth and my postpartum experience, it opened up a whole new journey that I feel called to embark on. Motherhood is a wild journey and for me something that I thought I was prepared for but realized that there was so much more that I was missing. I went into postpartum with what I thought were realistic expectations and while some of them were accurate I was still completely overwhelmed and astonished by how little emphasis is placed on postpartum wellness.
During pregnancy, you are typically bombarded with information from books, social media, family, friends, doctors, and midwives.
It felt like postpartum was an afterthought.
You’ll bleed a bit.
You’ll be tired.
And your nipples will hurt.
That’s what guidance I felt was provided to me.
In a typical pregnancy, you have weekly or bi-weekly appointments during the last few weeks and once your baby is born they also have very frequent appointments. What happens to the mother? Generally, you don’t have any follow-up care until the standard 6-week check-up, and after that…nothing. It can feel very isolating unless you seek out information on your own or have a group of women in your life that can offer guidance through their experiences.
I want to bring back the villages that support new mothers. Having adequate nutrition can make a world of difference in your postpartum experience and recovery. I want to support new mothers through holistic nutrition.
Our nutrition directly affects our recovery because our bodies have the potential to already be depleted during pregnancy and breastfeeding can further deplete any reserves you might have. Our lifestyle and environment, along with food, play a critical role in how our body functions and during postpartum we want it to be functioning as best as possible.
I’ve been on my own health journey for several years now and it is something I’m so passionate about! I’m beyond excited to be able to share my experience and knowledge to help other mothers and families during postpartum and beyond.
